blog tour: Reading Revelation A Comparison of Four Interpretive Translations of the Apocalypse

Traim in obsesia Apocalispei.

In perioada trecerii dintre ani, mi s-a ivit ocazia de a putea parcurge o lucrare echilibrata despre intelegerea Apocalisei.

Cine are pricepere, sa socoteasca numarul fiarei.

  • in opinia celor care imbratiseaza interpretarea preterista 666 este o  criptograma matematica(gematria) pe catre Apostolul Ioan o foloseste indicand criptat spre numele dictatorului roman Nero;

We live in a world trembling at Apocalypse obsession. Not just the fact that 2012 has just begun and Mayan predictions and other “catastrophic events” are beyond of many interpretations about how it will be and when will be the end. We are passionate about finding the details about the end time and in the same measure we want things to not end up too fast.

The world is fascinating prophecies about the future. The beginning of New Year, I came through a chance to read and take a deep look on Bible Revelation having Reading Revelation: A Comparison of Four Interpretive Translations of the Apocalypse published by Kregel Publications.

In a multitude of new interpretation, projections, anticipations and predictions, help the readers better understand the interpretations of the book of Revelation the Bible studies teacher form Arkansas Ouachita Baptist University, Marvin Pate has written an important book on eschatology which presents an honest, realistic and well balanced view combining the four current major hermeneutic of understanding of Revelation – Preterist, historicist, idealist and futurist.

When you try to understand the Revelation you are walking on a street of great controversies. Professor Pate emphasis does not goes necessary in this direction and his first step for a better understanding means to be closer to original – beside the English translations he added a valuable resource of the Greek Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum.

In the introduction the author presents a summary of the four interpretations pointed out the hermeneutical strengths. Chapter 1 is in the opinion of Professor Pate key to understanding the values of each interpretation. Thus Revelation 1.19 seems to support only three of the four current “Write therefore the things you’ve seen (preterist), things that are (idealist) and those that have to be after them (futurist) ”

Structured as a 5 column text book the book is not easy to read but is a valuable study resource for group or individual – everyone who wants ta have a better understanding about the book of Revelation.

Parallelism technique really helps to understand various ideas about controversial texts; for example the interpretation of the famous number 666 from Rev. 13.18 – “Here is wisdom. Who hath understanding count the number of the beast. For it is a total man. and his number is six hundred threescore and six ”

The preterist interpretation embracing a mathematic cryptogram idea (gematria) on the Apostle John uses encrypted words indicating to the name of Roman dictator Nero;
For the historicist interpretation by associating Roman numerals with letters the meaning of 666 is the name “Fili Dei Vicarius”.
Those who embrace the futurist interpretation see the 666 number that appears as a perfect symbol of humanity in contrast to number 7 – understand as the number of Divinity. The Antichrist will relocate the world power in Euro zone and lead to recurrence of the kingdom of Babylon.
For followers of idealist interpretation number 666 is a summary of the human condition and the hand & forehead symbolizes the perversion of thoughts and human activity. Those who persecute the Christian church will have that sign represented by their thinking / philosophy and works.

Reading Revelation: A Comparison of Four Interpretive Translations of the Apocalypse It will open your eyes to the Scripture text and help you to pay attention to what is being said.

Here is a brief attempt to put the four major interpretations in a table:

Revelation Preterist Historicist Futurist Idealist
Ch. 1 to 3 Represent historic churches Represents historic churches Represents historic churches and stages of church history Represent historic churches.
Ch. 4 to 19 Symbolic of contemporary conditions. Symbolic of history. Fall of Rome,Mohammedanism, Papacy, Reformation, etc. Future tribulation and the coming judgments on the apostate church and antichrist. The coming of Christ. Symbolic of the ongoing conflict between good and evil.
Ch. 20 to 22 Symbolizes heaven and victory. Final judgment and the eternal state. The Millennial kingdom, the judgment of evil and the eternal state. Represents the victory of all that is good.
